i. (history) A member of an ancient people of the Apennines northwest of Rome. It was said that during a festival the Sabine women were seized by the men of Romulus, and that when the Sabines attacked Rome the women placed themselves between the armies to stop the battle. By the 3rd century B.C. the Sabines had become fully Romanized.
